On Thursday in Al Rayyan, Morocco secured their spot in the semifinals of the FIFA Arab Cup 2025 by triumphing over Syria with a narrow 1-0 victory. Waleed Azaro delivered the decisive blow in the 79th minute with a powerful strike that put Morocco ahead in a closely fought match. Although Syria sought an equalizer, Morocco's disciplined defense held strong to protect their lead.
The tension escalated late in the game when Moroccan substitute Mohammed Moufid, who came onto the pitch in the 87th minute, was shown a red card just moments before the final whistle. Despite being down to ten players, the 2022 World Cup semifinalists demonstrated resilience, managing their defense through the eight minutes of stoppage time.
With this victory, Morocco is the first team to reach the semifinals of the tournament. The second quarterfinal earlier in the day saw Palestine set to challenge Saudi Arabia, adding to the excitement of the competition. Fans are also keenly anticipating Friday's matches, which will feature Jordan against Iraq and Algeria facing the UAE for a chance at the remaining semifinal slots.
Morocco's win bolsters their quest for the title as they maintain an impressive run in this regional tournament. Their ability to perform under pressure, coupled with a late goal and solid defense, solidifies their status as one of the frontrunners in this year's Arab Cup.
