Former Indian cricket opener Murali Vijay has lauded the iconic captain MS Dhoni, labeling him as a uniquely instinctive leader whose decisions transformed the landscape of Indian cricket. Vijay reminisced about Dhoni placing his trust in Joginder Sharma for the last over during the 2007 T20 World Cup—a decision that sparked skepticism but ultimately solidified its place in history. He commended Dhoni for possessing qualities that are truly irreplaceable, highlighting his extraordinary mental resilience and formidable hitting capability.
Having played for Chennai Super Kings for eight seasons under Dhoni's guidance, Vijay noted how the former captain has significantly impacted the careers of many players. Now active in the IPL, Dhoni has been retained by Chennai Super Kings for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Vijay emphasized that Dhoni's knack for thriving under pressure and his audacious playing style has made him one of India's most distinguished leaders. He also remarked on Dhoni's exceptional six-hitting ability, stating that few right-handers can rival his power.
In a recent interview with Taruwar Kohli on YouTube, Vijay expressed his deep admiration for Dhoni's strategic mindset and cricketing acumen. He asserted that the team should feel privileged to have had a captain like Dhoni, who consistently brought forth unique and unexpected strategies. Vijay also recognized Dhoni's composed demeanor on the field and the tremendous mark he has left on Indian cricket and the IPL, both as a player and as a captain.
Vijay initiated his international career in 2008, participating in 87 matches for India across all formats, amassing 4,490 runs including 12 centuries. He wrapped up his international career in 2023 after his final IPL appearance in 2020. Vijay’s international tenure included notable Test achievements, particularly in overseas conditions, but he regards playing under Dhoni as one of the pivotal experiences of his cricketing life.
