Cooper Flagg Seizes Record with 42 Points in Mavericks' Overtime Loss

Cooper Flagg Seizes Record with 42 Points in Mavericks' Overtime Loss

Post by : Maya Rahman

In an electrifying performance, Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg shattered an 18-year-old record held by LeBron James, scoring 42 points in a nail-biting 140-133 overtime defeat against the Utah Jazz. At just 18, Flagg now holds the record for the highest points scored by a player of his age in NBA history, eclipsing James’ previous mark of 37 points from December 2003.

Flagg played a pivotal role in bringing the Mavericks back into contention, executing a clutch free-throw sequence that tied the game in the closing seconds of regulation and propelled them to overtime. He accumulated 40 points during regular play and added 2 more in the overtime period, but the team ultimately fell short. Notably, Anthony Davis was sidelined from the game due to a left calf injury.

Most of Flagg’s scoring prowess came near the basket and at the free-throw line. He successfully shot 9-of-17 in the paint and converted 15 of his 20 free throws, including a stellar 24 points in the first half alone. His 42 points also matched the franchise record for most points scored by a Mavericks rookie, a feat previously achieved by Mark Aguirre in 1981.

After a slow start to the season while playing out of position at point guard, Flagg has returned to his natural forward role, proving why he was the top pick in last summer's NBA Draft. In addition to his scoring, he also contributed seven rebounds, six assists, and two blocks during the game.

While the Mavericks were unable to secure the victory, Flagg's impressive performance marks a high point in his young career. He will have further opportunities to surpass his record in upcoming matchups against the Detroit Pistons and the Philadelphia 76ers. Coincidentally, Flagg will celebrate his 19th birthday on Sunday, shortly after this remarkable achievement.
