Post by : Meena Ariff

Rising star Ncuti Gatwa, acclaimed for his role in Sex Education and recent performances in Doctor Who and Barbie, is embracing another thrilling project. The gifted actor is set to join Cynthia Erivo in Bad Fairies, a forthcoming animated musical comedy being produced by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in collaboration with Locksmith Animation.

Currently being crafted in London, Bad Fairies represents the inaugural project under the new first-look agreement between Warner Bros. and Locksmith Animation. Scheduled for theatrical release on May 21, 2027, the film aims to offer a modern and rebellious twist on traditional fairy tales.

A Rising Talent

Gatwa’s career exemplifies diversity, showcasing roles from the beloved Eric Effiong in Sex Education to his sci-fi escapades in Doctor Who, and now venturing into animation. At the age of 31, he has garnered accolades for his performances on stage in productions like The Importance of Being Earnest and Born With Teeth. His partnership with Broadway luminary Cynthia Erivo in Bad Fairies marks an exciting new chapter in his career.

What Awaits in Bad Fairies

Bad Fairies is set to subvert conventional fairy tale narratives, focusing on a group of rebellious fairies who push against the boundaries of their enchanted realm. Expect a musical experience filled with humor and heartfelt moments that promises to be both chaotic and engaging.

Behind the Creative Vision

The direction of the film is in the hands of Megan Nicole Dong, known for her work on Centaurworld, co-directed by DreamWorks veteran Olivier Staphylas. The screenplay, renowned for its wit and emotional depth, is penned by Deborah Frances-White.

Music plays a pivotal role in this cinematic adventure. The songs showcased will be crafted by the Tony Award-winning duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the masterminds behind Six: The Musical. Additionally, Isabella “Machine” Summers, associated with Florence + The Machine, will compose the score and contribute to the soundtrack, with Ian Eisendrath, celebrated for KPop Demon Hunters, acting as executive music producer.

A Premier Production Ensemble

Bad Fairies boasts an impressive lineup including producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, and cinematographer James C.J. Williams. Character design is spearheaded by Uwe Heidschötter, with narrative experts Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt sculpting the story. Justin Hutchinson-Chatburn and Mike Redman oversee the production design, while high-quality visual effects are ensured by DNEG Animation, a leading London studio.

Anticipating an Exciting Premiere

This initiative marks the inaugural theatrical release stemming from the collaboration between Warner Bros. and Locksmith Animation. With a fusion of Broadway talent, innovative animation, and a storyline brimming with unique twists, Bad Fairies promises to be a remarkable film experience.

Under the representation of Curtis Brown, UTA, Status PR UK, and Ziffren Brittenham LLP, Ncuti Gatwa is continuously enhancing his versatile career, with his role in Bad Fairies solidifying his presence as a dynamic force in the entertainment landscape.
