Oman Boosts Handicrafts Sector with SME Support

Oman Boosts Handicrafts Sector with SME Support

Post by : Shakul

The government of Oman is strengthening its support for the handicrafts sector through a dedicated initiative led by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority. The program is designed to empower craftsmen and ensure the long-term sustainability of traditional industries.

This initiative focuses on enhancing the role of handicrafts in the national economy while preserving Oman’s cultural identity. Officials emphasized that traditional crafts are not only part of heritage but also an important source of income for many communities.

The support package offered under the initiative includes financial assistance for setting up and maintaining workshops. It also provides funding for purchasing machinery and raw materials, which helps improve productivity and product quality.

In addition to financial support, the program offers marketing and packaging assistance. Craftsmen are also given opportunities to participate in exhibitions, allowing them to reach wider markets and promote their products more effectively.

Training is another key component of the initiative. Participants receive guidance to upgrade their skills and adopt modern techniques while maintaining traditional craftsmanship. This balance aims to make products more competitive in both local and international markets.

The initiative is open to individual artisans as well as craft businesses. Eligible applicants must be registered with the authority and hold the necessary licenses for their activities. They must also meet specific criteria, including not having received similar support in the past two years.

Authorities have published a detailed guide to help applicants understand the process. This ensures that craftsmen can apply easily and benefit from the available support without confusion.

The initiative covers a wide range of traditional crafts, including Omani daggers, silver items, palm products, perfumes, textiles, pottery, and leather goods. These crafts reflect the rich heritage of Oman and continue to attract both local and global interest.

Officials reported that between 2022 and 2025, nearly 3,000 beneficiaries received support under this program. With funding exceeding 3 million Omani riyals, the initiative has already made a significant impact on the growth of the handicrafts sector.
