A tragic incident in the occupied West Bank has drawn international attention after a seven-month-old Palestinian infant died following a shooting involving Israeli forces near Hebron. The incident also left the child’s parents seriously injured and has intensified concerns over civilian safety in the conflict-hit region.
According to Palestinian health authorities, the infant, identified as Sam Fahd Abu Haikal, was traveling with his parents and grandmother on Friday evening when Israeli troops opened fire on their vehicle in the Tel Rumeida area south of Hebron. The family was reportedly on their way from Bethlehem to visit relatives when the shooting occurred.
Medical officials said the child suffered severe injuries after a bullet struck the vehicle and hit multiple passengers. Despite emergency treatment, the infant later succumbed to his wounds. The child's mother sustained critical injuries and remains under medical care, while his father was also wounded during the incident.
The Israeli military acknowledged that civilians were injured and stated that an initial investigation is underway. According to military officials, soldiers perceived the approaching vehicle as a potential threat and responded with gunfire. The army said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being reviewed.
The shooting comes amid heightened tensions across the West Bank, where military operations have intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. Human rights organizations and international observers have repeatedly expressed concern over the growing number of civilian casualties, including women and children, in the region.
Family members described the incident as devastating, recalling the chaos and fear that unfolded within seconds. Relatives said the infant had celebrated his seven-month birthday on the same day as the shooting, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking for the family and the wider community.
The incident is expected to further fuel debate over the use of force in the occupied territories and increase calls for accountability and protection of civilians. Palestinian officials have demanded a full investigation, while rights groups continue to monitor developments surrounding the case and broader security operations in the West Bank.
