His message celebrated their hard work and triumph while emphasizing the importance of nurturing future talents in Portuguese football.
With prior global youth championships at the U-20 level, Portugal's history includes titles in 1989 and 1991. Now, with this U-17 victory in Qatar, they have penned a new chapter in their rich football narrative.
Portugal kicked off their title run with a display of formidable attacking prowess. They opened the group stage with a staggering 6–1 victory over New Caledonia and followed with a 6–0 blowout against Morocco. Despite a 2–1 setback against Japan, their advancement to the knockout rounds was already assured.
Their path was marked by resilience and strategic gameplay. They edged past Belgium 2–1 in the Round of 32, then showcased dominance with a 5–0 win over Mexico in the Round of 16. After defeating Switzerland 2–0 in the quarterfinals, they faced Brazil in a heart-stopping semifinal where they secured a spot in the final via a penalty shootout, ending 6–5 after a scoreless draw.
The final match against Austria proved to be a fierce duel. Anisio Cabral’s decisive goal in the 32nd minute marked the sole score of the match. His stellar performance throughout the tournament established him as a standout player for Portugal. This victory has firmly placed Portugal’s promising youth talent on the global football map.
Ronaldo’s commendation of the team underscores the critical role of youth training in the sport. As he looks ahead to his sixth World Cup in 2026, Ronaldo expressed hope that these young players will inspire future generations. He believes that the U-17 squad’s success will energize fans and aspiring footballers across Portugal.
