Key Signs of Pancreatic Cancer to Recognize on World Pancreatic Cancer Day

Key Signs of Pancreatic Cancer to Recognize on World Pancreatic Cancer Day

Post by : Saif Rahman

On this important occasion of World Pancreatic Cancer Day 2025, we delve into the crucial role of the pancreas—a small yet essential organ responsible for digestion and regulating blood sugar levels. Pancreatic cancer ranks as one of the most lethal forms of cancer, being the twelfth most common globally. Recognizing early symptoms is vital, as identifying issues early makes a significant difference in survival rates. Dr. Prasant Chandra, a Surgical Oncologist, sheds light on five warning signs that warrant attention.

The first indicator is persistent abdominal discomfort, which may express itself as pain radiating to the back. Many individuals misattribute dull pain in the upper abdomen to common digestive issues. Dr. Chandra advises that this pain can become more intense after meals or when lying down, possibly stemming from conditions like pancreatitis. Other triggers may include gallstones, excessive alcohol consumption, or tumors. Continuous pain should prompt immediate medical consultation to rule out severe underlying issues.

Unexplained weight loss is a significant red flag as well. If you notice your clothes fitting loosely without altering your diet or lifestyle, your pancreas might not be functioning optimally. An inability of the pancreas to produce adequate digestive enzymes can lead to malabsorption of nutrients, causing weight loss alongside a normal appetite. Dr. Chandra cautions that sudden weight loss paired with symptoms like fatigue, bloating, or oily stools may indicate chronic pancreatitis or even pancreatic cancer. Tracking these changes and seeking early intervention can be crucial.

Furthermore, alterations in stool and jaundice should not be overlooked. Stools that are pale, greasy, foul-smelling, or tend to float may signal issues with fat digestion linked to pancreatic function. In addition, the yellowing of skin or eyes, coupled with dark urine and itching, might indicate jaundice, often related to liver or pancreatic ailments. Many individuals misinterpret these signs and postpone seeking medical advice, which can be detrimental. Persistent digestive irregularities or any indications of jaundice should trigger a consultation with healthcare professionals.

Lastly, sudden onset of diabetes or unstable blood sugar levels in adults over the age of 50 might hint at pancreatic issues. The pancreas's role in insulin production is pivotal for blood sugar regulation. A compromised pancreas can lead to diminished insulin production and erratic blood sugar patterns. In 10–15% of pancreatic cancer cases, diabetes appears merely months prior to diagnosis. Dr. Chandra highlights that regular screenings—including blood tests for amylase and lipase, as well as imaging techniques like CT scans—can enable earlier detection of pancreatic diseases and significantly enhance survival prospects. Early diagnosis can improve the chance of surgical intervention, yielding a survival rate of approximately 60% in suitable patients.

Understanding these key signs and responding quickly can truly be lifesaving. Regular health check-ups, timely diagnostic procedures, and awareness of subtle physical changes are crucial for preserving pancreatic health. Pancreatic issues can often be elusive, but recognizing the signs such as abdominal pain, unintended weight loss, stool alterations, jaundice, and sudden diabetes may lead to proactive measures and improved health outcomes.
