Russia has launched its hypersonic Oreshnik missile at a Ukrainian site, asserting it was retaliation for a supposed drone attack on President Vladimir Putin's residence. Kyiv dismissed the allegation, branding it as untrue and misleading.
The Oreshnik missile, touted by Russia to exceed speeds of ten Mach, is capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads. Authorities indicated that the missile deployed in this incident had a conventional warhead. Moscow claimed it aimed for energy facilities and drone production sites within Ukraine. Additionally, attack drones and other long-range precision weaponry were utilized.
The governor of Ukraine’s Lviv region confirmed that a Russian strike impacted an infrastructure target, with some reports suggesting it may have been a major underground gas storage facility. Ukrainian officials are currently evaluating the extent of the damage.
Initially employed in November 2024, the Oreshnik missile targeted a military production site in Ukraine, utilizing dummy warheads that led to minimal damage. President Putin asserts that the missile's conventional warheads possess destructive capabilities akin to nuclear armaments. Western officials, however, remain doubtful regarding its effectiveness on the battlefield.
The positioning of such missiles in Belarus indicates Russia's commitment to enhancing its striking capabilities across Europe in the event of an escalation. Analysts caution that the use of hypersonic arms could heighten regional tensions and obstruct ongoing peace negotiations.
This event underscores the threats posed by modern weaponry in warfare and reflects the persistent strain between Russia and Ukraine, amplifying security concerns in Eastern Europe.
