A recent governmental survey highlights a significant shift in Japan's perspective on national security. For the first time, the growing military strength of China has edged out concerns regarding North Korea's nuclear capabilities, ranking as the top security anxiety among the Japanese populace.
The poll reveals that 68 percent of participants identify China's military expansion and its actions in the South China Sea and near Japan as primary concerns. This marks an increase from 61 percent in the previous survey conducted three years ago, indicating heightened public apprehension regarding China's influence in the region.
Commencing in early November, the survey coincided with remarks from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that escalated diplomatic tensions with Beijing. She suggested that Japan might need to mobilize its forces if a Chinese assault on Taiwan posed a threat to Japan itself—a statement that Beijing vehemently condemned.
In retaliation, China has cautioned its citizens against traveling to Japan and hinted at potential restrictions on rare earth exports, essential for contemporary industries. Additionally, China has conducted military exercises close to Japan and large-scale war games around Taiwan, involving missiles, warships, and aircraft.
The poll further recorded unprecedented support for Japan's Self-Defense Forces, with a striking 94 percent of respondents expressing a positive outlook toward the military. This reflects a growing sense of confidence in Japan's armed forces amid rising regional tensions.
As Japan prepares to refine its defense strategy, increases in defense spending are anticipated, continuing a plan to double military expenditures to 2 percent of GDP. Despite limitations imposed by Japan's post-war constitution on engaging in warfare, the nation remains one of the most significant defense spenders globally.
China has criticized Japan's military ambitions, alleging that Tokyo is exacerbating regional tensions. Moreover, it has cautioned Japan against meddling in the Taiwan situation, which China considers an internal issue.
This survey underscores a shifting security outlook in Japan as power dynamics in East Asia evolve, with public opinion playing a crucial role in shaping the nation's preparations for upcoming challenges.
