Rare Fabergé Winter Egg Achieves Record-Breaking £22.9 Million at Auction

Rare Fabergé Winter Egg Achieves Record-Breaking £22.9 Million at Auction

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a remarkable auction in London, the Imperial Winter Egg, a diamond-embellished masterpiece by Fabergé, sold for an impressive £22.9 million ($30.2 million), establishing a new global record for the iconic jeweller.

Created in 1913 on the orders of Tsar Nicholas II as a tribute to his mother, this Winter Egg is celebrated as one of Fabergé’s finest creations. Designed by Alma Theresia Pihl—one of the two female workmasters of St. Petersburg's illustrious jewellery house—the egg exemplifies extraordinary craftsmanship.

With a height of 8.2cm, the egg is exquisitely crafted from rock crystal, adorned with rose-cut diamonds and platinum motifs resembling snowflakes. Inside, it features a delicate basket made of white quartz flowers—a subtle representation of Fabergé’s meticulous artistry.

This auction price dramatically exceeds the previous record of £8.9 million for a Fabergé egg set in 2007. There were originally 50 eggs crafted for the Romanov family between 1885 and 1917, with merely seven remaining in private hands, making this piece a rare gemstone for collectors.

The Winter Egg now becomes one of the prized Fabergé creations to endure through the ages, wars, and upheavals, a lasting symbol of Imperial Russia's rich artistic legacy.
