Beloved Human Rights Lawyer M. Ravi Dies, Leaving a Profound Impact

The esteemed lawyer Ravi Madasamy, fondly known as M. Ravi, was found unresponsive in the early hours of December 24. At 56 years old, he was transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital around 6:50 a.m., where despite the medical team’s intensive efforts, he was declared deceased shortly after arrival.

Authorities have indicated that initial investigations reveal no signs of foul play, yet the police are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances of his abrupt passing.

M. Ravi was a revered member of Singapore’s legal community, recognized for his unwavering commitment to human rights and constitutional law. During his career, he spearheaded numerous landmark cases that significantly influenced Singapore’s legal landscape and advocated for the rights of numerous marginalized groups.

His friend and fellow lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam expressed profound sadness at his passing, stating, “M. Ravi faced various personal challenges but remained steadfast in his beliefs. His relentless efforts have created a substantial legacy in Singapore’s legal arena. His death is a tremendous loss for us all.”

M. Ravi was celebrated for employing the law to effect social change, tirelessly advocating for justice and equality, earning admiration from colleagues, activists, and the larger community.

As both the legal community and society at large grieve the loss of M. Ravi, heartfelt tributes are emerging, honoring the lawyer whose dedication and influence have made a lasting imprint on Singapore's legal history.
