Renowned singer Robbie Williams has opened up about an alarming side effect he has faced while using Mounjaro, a weight loss injectable. He disclosed that blurred vision has been impacting his ability to see his fans during live performances.
At 51, Robbie has turned to Mounjaro, which is commonly used for managing Type 2 diabetes and aiding in weight loss. He praised its significant advantages for both his physical and mental health, labeling it a “medical necessity” for his emotional stability. “The mental relief I’ve experienced since starting Mounjaro is truly freeing,” he remarked.
However, despite the positives, Robbie confessed that his eyesight has deteriorated. He noted that audience members seem to him like indistinct shapes. “On my latest tour, there’s a routine where I serenade a girl with She’s The One, but truthfully, I can't see her clearly at all,” he shared.
His prescription has changed significantly over the years, leading him to purchase new glasses. Robbie emphasized the need for awareness among users: “I aim to inform anyone reading this about the possible risks involved, stressing the importance of thorough research.”
Recent research indicates that weight loss medications like semaglutide, found in products such as Ozempic and Wegovy, may have associations with rare eye issues that could elevate the risk of vision loss. A study conducted in 2024 tracked nearly 17,000 participants over six years, revealing a possible connection without establishing a direct cause-and-effect link.
Experts point out that factors such as poorly controlled diabetes, prevalent among these medication users, can further exacerbate eye conditions. A report in 2024 documented nine vision-related complications stemming from the use of weight loss injectables in Type 2 diabetes patients. These complications included optic nerve strokes and inflammation, with some leading to partial and possibly permanent vision impairment.
Ophthalmologists highlight the need for vigilant monitoring and preventive measures for individuals on these injectables. They recommend discussing potential risks and benefits with healthcare professionals, observing changes in vision such as blurriness, consulting a doctor before halting medications, scheduling regular eye examinations, and practicing caution, especially for those with cardiovascular problems or a smoking history.
Robbie Williams’ honest remarks underscore the crucial need for awareness surrounding the possible side effects of popular weight loss treatments, encouraging proactive steps to protect both general and eye health.
