Chennai, India — September 19, 2025 — Beloved Tamil actor and comedian Robo Shankar has tragically passed away at the age of 46. He died on September 18, 2025, at GEM Hospital in Chennai, a day after collapsing on the set of his upcoming film, GodsJilla. Despite immediate medical attention and being placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), his condition deteriorated due to complications from a severe gastrointestinal bleed and multi-organ failure.
Born in Madurai, Robo Shankar began his career in the entertainment industry with a unique flair for mimicry and dance. He earned the nickname "Robo" for his distinctive robot-style dance moves, which captivated audiences during his performances on television. His breakthrough came through the popular Tamil reality comedy show Kalakka Povadhu Yaaru, where his energetic performances and impeccable comic timing won him widespread recognition.
Shankar's success on television paved the way for his entry into Tamil cinema. He gained prominence with supporting roles in films such as Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara, Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, and Maari. His performances in these films showcased his versatility and solidified his status as a prominent figure in the industry. He also appeared in Viswasam, starring alongside Ajith Kumar, further endearing him to fans.
In recent years, Shankar faced health challenges, including a battle with jaundice that led to noticeable weight loss. Despite these health issues, he continued to work, demonstrating his dedication to his craft. On September 17, 2025, while filming GodsJilla, Shankar collapsed on set and was rushed to the hospital. He was admitted to the ICU but succumbed to his ailments the following day.
The news of Shankar's passing has sent shockwaves through the Tamil film industry and beyond. Prominent figures have expressed their grief and paid tribute to the late actor. Actor Kamal Haasan shared an emotional message, describing Shankar as a "younger brother" and lamenting the loss of a talented artist. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also extended his condolences, acknowledging Shankar's contributions to Tamil cinema. Other celebrities, including actors Dhanush, Vijay Sethupathi, and Karthi, visited Shankar's residence in Valasaravakkam to pay their respects.
Shankar is survived by his wife, Priyanka, and their daughter, Indraja, who has also pursued a career in acting. His family has expressed gratitude for the support and love shown by fans and colleagues during this difficult time. The funeral arrangements are being made, and details will be shared with the public shortly.
