Kyiv, September 29, 2025: Russia carried out one of its heaviest attacks on Ukraine early Sunday, firing hundreds of drones and missiles at Kyiv and several other regions. The overnight assault killed at least four people, injured 67, and caused widespread damage to homes, factories, and a cardiology clinic.
Ukraine’s military reported that Russia launched 595 drones and 48 missiles. Ukrainian air defences intercepted 568 drones and 43 missiles, yet the capital still faced more than 12 hours of bombardment. Explosions, loud air defence fire, and drone sightings shook Kyiv as smoke rose over damaged buildings.
Poland temporarily closed airspace near two southeastern cities during the attack and scrambled jets before reopening the skies once the threat passed.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes and called on international partners to block Russia’s energy revenues. “The time for decisive action is long overdue,” Zelenskyy said, urging the United States, Europe, the G7, and G20 to respond strongly.
Russia’s defence ministry described the operation as a “massive” strike targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure, including airfields. While Moscow has denied targeting civilians, thousands of non-combatants have been killed since the war began.
In Kyiv’s suburbs, newly built homes were destroyed, and cars were crushed under debris. Residents searched through wreckage while others took shelter in metro stations, monitoring updates on their phones. Other cities, including Zaporizhzhia, were also hit, leaving at least 16 injured. Among the fatalities nationwide was a 12-year-old girl.
Ukraine remains on high alert as authorities assess the damage and brace for further attacks. Zelenskyy confirmed the arrival of an additional Patriot missile system from Israel, with two more expected later this autumn, highlighting the ongoing pressure on the country’s air defence systems.
Rescue and recovery operations continue across affected regions as the situation remains tense.
