Sherrone Moore, the former head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, was taken into police custody on Wednesday night after authorities began probing an alleged assault incident. Earlier that day, he was dismissed from his coaching position.
According to the Pittsfield Township Police Department, officers responded to an assault report on Wednesday afternoon. The police confirmed the detainment of a suspect and indicated that the incident was targeted, posing no wider threat to the community. Following this, Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail as prosecutors consider possible charges. Authorities have withheld further details to safeguard the ongoing investigation.
Before being taken to Pittsfield Township, Moore had been held temporarily by the Saline Police Department, located to the west of Pittsfield.
Earlier on Wednesday, the University of Michigan announced Moore’s immediate termination due to findings from an internal investigation that revealed “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship between him and a staff member. Athletic Director Warde Manuel reiterated the university’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on such behavior.
In the wake of this announcement, Biff Poggi has been appointed as the interim head coach.
Moore’s departure concludes a challenging season, with the Wolverines finishing at 9–3, including a two-game suspension due to a controversy regarding sign-stealing. Michigan has secured a spot to face No. 13 Texas on December 31 in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando, ending the regular season ranked No. 18 in the College Football Playoff standings.
At 39 years old, Moore ended his tenure with a record of 16–8, having taken over from Jim Harbaugh, who departed for the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers following the school’s championship run in 2023.
