India’s cricket captain Shubman Gill has said that winning the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup remains the ultimate goal for the Indian team after their heartbreaking defeat in the final of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Speaking during the BCCI Naman Awards event in Mumbai, Gill admitted that the loss in the 2023 final still motivates the team to aim for redemption in the next edition of the tournament.
India dominated the 2023 World Cup with an unbeaten run throughout the league stage and knockout matches before eventually losing the final to Australia national cricket team. Gill said the team felt they were only one step away from lifting the trophy.
According to Gill, the upcoming 2027 World Cup presents another opportunity for India to achieve global success in the 50-over format. The tournament will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia and is scheduled to take place in October and November.
Gill emphasised that winning a World Cup for the country, regardless of the format, is always the biggest dream for any Indian cricketer. He said the thought of lifting the trophy in 2027 often crosses his mind and remains a major motivation for the team.
India are currently enjoying a successful period in international cricket, having won multiple major ICC tournaments in recent years. The team captured the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2024 and followed it with victory in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
India also defended their T20 World Cup title in 2026, becoming the first team to retain the trophy in the tournament’s history. If India manage to win the 2027 ODI World Cup, they could achieve an unprecedented milestone by holding all three major ICC white-ball titles in the same cycle.
With a talented squad and strong recent performances in global tournaments, Gill believes the Indian team has another realistic chance to claim cricket’s most prestigious 50-over title in the upcoming World Cup.
