South Africa Dominates Ireland in Second T20I to Secure Series

South Africa Dominates Ireland in Second T20I to Secure Series

Post by : Maya Rahman

In a commanding performance, South Africa defeated Ireland by 65 runs in the second T20I match held in Paarl, establishing a 2-0 advantage in the three-match series. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, South Africa scored 201 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 20 overs. Ireland’s response fell short, as they managed to score only 136 runs for 3 wickets.

Dane Van Niekerk, returning to the squad, showcased her power hitting by scoring 41 runs off just 19 balls, which included three fours and three sixes. This performance elevated South Africa’s scoring rate above ten runs an over. Alongside, Chloe Tryon contributed an unbeaten 16 runs off seven deliveries, ensuring the team crossed the 200-run threshold and setting a new record for the most sixes by a South African woman in T20 internationals.

Faye Tunnicliffe's essential contribution at the top of the order saw her achieve her maiden T20I half-century, scoring 50 runs from 40 balls. Her partnership of 78 runs with Sune Luus was pivotal in building a solid foundation for South Africa’s innings. Aimee Maguire emerged as Ireland’s leading bowler, taking 3 wickets for 43 runs, claiming the scalps of Tunnicliffe, Luus, and captain Laura Wolvaardt.

Ireland struggled in their run chase, scoring only 33 runs during the powerplay without losing any wickets. Chloe Tryon made an impact by dismissing both openers, Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis, leaving Ireland at a precarious 35 for 2. The scoring rate continued to lag throughout the innings.

A resilient partnership of 76 runs for the third wicket between Orla Prendergast and Leah Paul brought some hope. Paul scored 40 runs off 29 balls before being dismissed, while Prendergast finished not out on 51 from 43 deliveries, reaching her half-century in the final over. However, by that time, South Africa had already secured a dominant victory, thus clinching the T20I series.
