A tragic explosion tore through a busy bar during New Year's Eve celebrations at a prestigious ski resort in southwestern Switzerland, resulting in dozens of fatalities and nearly 100 injuries, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The blast occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time at "Le Constellation," a popular bar in Crans-Montana, known for its upscale atmosphere and large holiday gatherings. Initial reports indicate the explosion caused a massive fire and widespread devastation inside the venue.
Swiss police have described the situation as critical, with the exact death toll still uncertain. The Italian foreign ministry cited Swiss officials saying about 40 people may have died, but local police only confirmed that the casualties number in the "tens." Many victims include international visitors attending the New Year's party.
Emergency response was swift and extensive. Over 10 helicopters and 40 ambulances were deployed to the scene to transport injured individuals to nearby hospitals. Medical teams report treating numerous patients suffering severe burns and other critical injuries. The main hospital’s intensive care unit in Valais is currently at full capacity, prompting the transfer of some patients to other medical centers.
Authorities have cordoned off the entire area around the resort for safety and investigation purposes. In addition, a no-fly zone has been enforced above Crans-Montana to facilitate rescue and emergency operations. The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, and investigations are underway to determine what triggered the blast.
Officials urge the public to avoid the region and have expressed condolences to the victims and their families as rescue and medical teams continue their efforts.
