Thailand and Singapore have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation following high-level talks between the defence ministers of both countries in Singapore. The discussions highlighted the importance of deepening military collaboration, enhancing technological cooperation, and promoting regional stability through ASEAN-led initiatives.
Thailand’s Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Adul Boonthamcharoen, met with Singapore’s Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing during an official visit to Singapore. The visit marked the Thai minister’s first overseas trip since assuming office and reflected the long-standing strategic partnership between the two Southeast Asian nations.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed ongoing defence cooperation and explored new opportunities to expand collaboration across various military branches. Particular attention was given to joint military exercises, professional exchanges, and the sharing of expertise in modern security and defence operations.
Thailand welcomed the renewal of Singapore’s participation in the Cobra Gold military exercise, one of the largest multinational defence exercises in the Asia-Pacific region. Officials noted that continued cooperation through such initiatives helps improve operational readiness and strengthens trust between armed forces.
The two ministers also discussed future cooperation in defence technology, innovation, and industrial development. Technology transfer and defence industry partnerships were identified as key areas that could enhance national security capabilities while supporting long-term strategic objectives for both countries.
Regional security and ASEAN cooperation formed an important part of the discussions. Thailand expressed its support for Singapore’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, a year that will also mark the 60th anniversary of ASEAN. Both countries emphasized the importance of strengthening ASEAN unity and increasing the bloc’s influence in addressing regional and global challenges.
The talks also touched on the upcoming Shangri-La Dialogue, one of the world’s leading security forums. Thai officials described the platform as a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas with international defence leaders and gain insights that can contribute to future policy development. The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability across Southeast Asia through stronger bilateral and regional cooperation.
