China has officially inaugurated the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, renowned as the longest expressway tunnel globally, highlighting significant strides in infrastructure development in northwest China. Spanning 22.13 kilometers, the tunnel navigates the formidable Tianshan Mountains, revolutionizing transportation in one of the area's most difficult regions.
Situated within the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, this tunnel reduces the arduous mountain journey from several hours to approximately 20 minutes, according to state media. Its opening coincides with the launch of the G0711 Urumqi–Yuli Expressway, which is a crucial transport corridor traversing north and south.
The expressway, which extends 324.7 kilometers, represents an investment of 46.7 billion yuan (around $6.63 billion) and was built over five years. It acts as an essential transport link, uniting city clusters in both northern and southern Xinjiang, areas that have long been separated by the daunting Tianshan mountains.
These mountains stretch nearly 2,500 kilometers through central Xinjiang, segregating Urumqi, the region’s northern largest city, from Korla, the largest city to the south. With the expressway now operational, the journey between these two cities has been significantly shortened from about seven hours to roughly three hours.
In addition to facilitating local transport, this new route enhances Xinjiang's status as a strategic transportation hub. By connecting to established expressway networks, it links major economic zones such as the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei orbit, the Yangtze River Delta, the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, and the Chengdu–Chongqing ambit. This amplifies its role as a critical corridor between China's thriving eastern economic regions and nations throughout Eurasia.
According to officials, this initiative is poised to foster stronger economic ties between northern and southern Xinjiang, bolster logistics and tourism, and pave additional paths for trade and international exchange, seamlessly integrating the region into broader national and regional transport networks.
