Tim Hodgson, the Federal Energy Minister, has publicly apologized to Coastal First Nations in light of comments that were perceived as disrespectful regarding a potential meeting with the group. This apology followed his earlier suggestion that alliance president Marilyn Slett could attend virtually if she was unable to be present physically.
The Coastal First Nations alliance, representing nine Nations along Northern British Columbia's coast, has historically opposed the transport of bitumen through their territories. This matter has gained renewed attention due to a recent agreement between the federal and Alberta governments that aims to clarify the pathway for a proposed pipeline project.
Slett raised significant concerns about when and where the proposed meeting would occur, noting that attending in person was not feasible. Hodgson's retort of, “It’s called Zoom,” triggered backlash for downplaying the importance of respectful and direct engagement with the Nation.
Quickly realizing the gravity of his statement, Hodgson retracted it the next day, admitting it was a misstep. He personally reached out to the alliance to express his regret and confirmed his willingness to meet face-to-face at a mutually agreeable time and location.
In his public statement, Hodgson referred to his previous comment as a “poor choice of words,” underlining his commitment to foster a collaborative relationship with the alliance's leadership. He reiterated that in-person discussions are vital for addressing their concerns about the pipeline and its implications for their lands, water, and rights.
Hodgson added that he is ready to visit the community, highlighting the necessity of respectful consultation as discussions continue regarding significant energy projects. Coastal First Nations representatives have yet to announce whether a rescheduled meeting is in the works.
