Republican Congressman Randy Fine has introduced the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act, a bill designed to give the President legal authority to pursue the annexation of Greenland and eventually make it the 51st US state. Fine stressed the growing strategic value of Greenland, especially as rival nations like China and Russia increase their activity in the Arctic region.
Fine warned of the urgent need to act, highlighting that America’s adversaries are attempting to establish a presence in the Arctic, and the US must move quickly to prevent this. The bill would authorize the President to take all necessary measures to negotiate or acquire Greenland, securing US dominance in the Arctic for generations to come.
The Congressman referred to statements from former President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both of whom have supported the idea of the US acquiring Greenland. Fine said this legislation sends a firm message to China and Russia that the US will no longer tolerate interference or challenges to its sovereignty in the Arctic.
The White House has also confirmed that Trump views Greenland as a strategically vital asset for both US and European security. Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt explained that the President fears Greenland could fall under hostile control if the US does not assert itself, creating risks for multiple regions.
Leavitt added that US governance could also benefit Greenland by bringing it closer into the American economic and security framework. Although no specific timeline for annexation has been announced, the White House emphasized that this issue remains a top priority given the shifting geopolitical situation in the Arctic.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has drawn increasing attention due to climate change, new Arctic shipping routes, and competition among world powers. The US already has a military presence on the island, but the growing ambitions of China and Russia in the region have raised serious concerns in Washington.
This new legislation represents a major step toward solidifying American influence in the Arctic and securing long-term strategic advantages over global rivals.
