Team India has officially addressed the discourse around Ayush Badoni's selection for the One Day International series against New Zealand. The young cricketer from Delhi was brought into the squad following the injury of Washington Sundar. The decision raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike, prompting the team management to clarify their reasoning.
Badoni’s selection sparked mixed reactions. Numerous former cricketers and fans argued that alternatives like Riyan Parag or Rinku Singh could have been more suitable. As the series unfolded, many debated whether Badoni was prepared for the international stage.
In a press briefing before the second ODI against New Zealand, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak addressed these issues. Kotak emphasized that Badoni earned his spot through consistent performances in domestic cricket, India A games, and the Indian Premier League. He noted that the team required a dual-skilled player, especially in light of Sundar’s absence.
According to Kotak, having only five bowlers is not a feasible strategy in ODIs. Injuries and unforeseen circumstances can leave the team lacking bowling options. He stressed that having a sixth bowling option is invaluable, and Badoni’s ability to deliver useful off-spin fills that gap, making him an appropriate replacement for Sundar in terms of team dynamics.
Kotak highlighted Badoni’s track record whenever he has been given an opportunity, noting his performance in India A one-day matches and his composure under pressure. His IPL experience has also enhanced his abilities as a white-ball player.
Statistically, Badoni has a commendable record, having amassed 693 runs at an average exceeding 36 and a strike rate above 93 across 27 List A matches, along with taking 18 wickets while showcasing solid economy.
In recent tours with South Africa A and Australia A, Badoni demonstrated his all-around skills, scoring a half-century against South Africa A and claiming crucial wickets versus Australia A. Such performances bolster his candidacy as a reliable squad member.
Badoni has played 56 matches for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, scoring 963 runs with a robust strike rate, reflecting his ability to perform under pressure and score rapidly when required.
While opinions are varied, Team India asserts that the selection is grounded in team balance rather than popularity. The management has confidence in Badoni’s abilities and views him as a multi-dimensional player. For Badoni, this selection represents a significant opportunity to showcase his talents at the highest level and address the skepticism surrounding his inclusion.
