A high-level Chinese medical delegation visited Turkmenistan on April 15, 2026, opening new avenues of cooperation in the healthcare sector, particularly in child care and traditional medicine.
The delegation, led by Tan Zhishu, Rector of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, visited the headquarters of the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow Charitable Foundation for Supporting Children in Need of Care in Arkadag City, a modern urban center focused on healthcare and social welfare development.
During the visit, Oguljakhan Atabaeva, Vice-President for Medical Affairs of the Foundation, held detailed discussions with the delegation on strengthening bilateral cooperation in healthcare, especially in areas related to children’s health and rehabilitation.
Both sides highlighted the importance of a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding aimed at establishing a Turkmen-Chinese Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance collaboration between medical institutions of the two countries.
The discussions also emphasized expanding cooperation in areas such as complex medical treatment, rehabilitation services, and the integration of traditional and modern medical practices to improve healthcare outcomes.
Atabaeva noted that Turkmenistan places strong emphasis on protecting children's health and improving their quality of life through advanced medical care and social support systems. She also highlighted the role of the foundation, established in 2021, in providing critical medical assistance and conducting complex surgeries for children.
The Chinese delegation expressed strong interest in further expanding cooperation and acknowledged Turkmenistan as a reliable partner in healthcare development. They also highlighted the global expansion of traditional medicine centers and welcomed Turkmenistan’s inclusion in this network.
The visiting delegation toured the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow Children's Health and Rehabilitation Center, where they observed modern treatment facilities and integrated healthcare services designed to support children's recovery and development.
The visit also included a tour of the State Equestrian Circus, where hippotherapy is used as a natural rehabilitation method, demonstrating innovative approaches to improving children's physical and emotional well-being.
Both sides expressed confidence that the visit would strengthen humanitarian ties and lead to long-term collaboration in healthcare, education, and scientific research.
