China’s flagship carrier Air China has officially resumed direct flights between Beijing and Pyongyang after a six-year suspension, marking a significant step in North Korea’s gradual reopening to the outside world. The route had been halted since the Covid-19 pandemic, when North Korea sealed its borders almost completely.
The first resumed flight departed Beijing Capital Airport and landed at Pyongyang’s Sunan International Airport, operated by a Boeing 737-700. While the aircraft can carry over 100 passengers, current travel remains restricted to individuals with official purposes such as business, study, or diplomatic work, reflecting North Korea’s cautious approach to reopening.
China continues to play a crucial role in supporting North Korea’s economy and international connectivity, being its largest trading partner. The resumption of flights follows the recent restart of cross-border train services between the two countries, further indicating a slow but steady normalization of movement and exchanges.
Travellers, including frequent visitor Zhao Bin, expressed optimism that increased connectivity would boost business and tourism in the future. Before the pandemic, Chinese tourists formed the majority of foreign visitors to North Korea, contributing significantly to its economy. However, authorities have yet to confirm a full reopening for international tourists, particularly from Western countries.
