US Conducts Strategic Airstrikes on ISIS in Syria Following Lethal Assault

US Conducts Strategic Airstrikes on ISIS in Syria Following Lethal Assault

Post by : Meena Ariff

On Friday, the U.S. military executed extensive airstrikes across central Syria, striking numerous Islamic State sites in response to a fatal attack on American forces, as reported by U.S. officials.

Dubbed “Operation Hawkeye Strike,” this initiative concentrated on ISIS militants, their weapons facilities, and crucial logistical support. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the operations, stating they were a decisive act of retaliation rather than an initiation of a wider conflict.

“This is not the start of a war,” asserted Hegseth, explaining that the operation aimed at delivering swift justice against the perpetrators. He reiterated the commitment to pursue any threat to American personnel as needed.

These strikes were prompted by an attack the previous weekend near Palmyra, where an assailant targeted a U.S.-Syrian convoy. The assault resulted in the deaths of two U.S. Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter, with three additional soldiers injured. The attacker was killed on the scene.

U.S. intelligence determined the attacker was connected to Islamic State, despite his alleged affiliation with Syrian security forces. Syrian officials indicated that he was suspected of extremist sympathies.

Currently, approximately 1,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Syria, focused on preventing the revival of Islamic State. Over recent months, coalition forces have ramped up air and ground actions against ISIS remnants, frequently in coordination with Syrian security units.

The political landscape in Syria has notably changed since last year when former President Bashar al-Assad was ousted following a lengthy civil war. Under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, the current government has committed to collaborating with international initiatives against ISIS and has formalized its coordination efforts with the U.S.-led coalition.

Washington officials emphasized that these recent strikes were deliberately concentrated, aimed at deterring future assaults while preserving regional stability.
