A sudden layoff by a US-based company has shocked Indian employees after they were dismissed during a short virtual meeting that lasted only four minutes. The incident, first shared by one of the affected employees on Reddit, has gone viral online and sparked strong reactions.
According to the employee’s post, the entire process happened without any prior notice. On what seemed like a normal workday, the employee logged in at 9 a.m. and later saw an invite for a mandatory meeting with the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO). The call was scheduled for 11 a.m. When the meeting began, all microphones and cameras were disabled. The COO then announced that most of the Indian workforce would be laid off immediately.
The employee recalled that the COO made it clear that the layoffs were not connected to performance but were part of an internal restructuring plan. What upset the workers most was the complete lack of communication. The COO refused to take questions and ended the call just minutes after delivering the news. Employees were told they would receive an email if they were among those losing their jobs.
In terms of compensation, the company promised to pay the full salary for October and encash any unused leaves. However, for many employees, the emotional impact was far more serious than the financial one. “This is the first time I’ve been laid off, and it just truly hurts,” the employee wrote in the Reddit post.
The story quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread sympathy and support. Many users commented with encouraging words, job leads, and offers to help. One user wrote, “Which profile are you in? If I can help you, do DM.” Another asked, “Bro, what is your role and experience? Please DM me, I might be able to help.”
Others encouraged the laid-off workers to see the situation as a chance for a new beginning. One message read: “Take this opportunity to reflect on what you truly want to do next. It could be what you’ve been doing or something new. Don’t lose hope – you will come out stronger from this. Reach out to your network and start building connections for your next role.”
The incident highlights the growing concerns about how companies handle layoffs in the remote work era. The lack of transparency, communication, and sensitivity in this case has raised questions about corporate responsibility toward employees, especially when sudden job cuts affect mental well-being as much as financial security.
