Malaysia is planning to strengthen its border security forces by equipping them with weapons such as pistols or tasers, following a recent shooting incident involving a border agency officer. The move reflects growing concerns over the safety of personnel operating in high-risk border areas.
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that the Cabinet has agreed in principle to provide the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) with appropriate armaments. The decision comes after discussions within the ministry on improving the safety and effectiveness of the agency.
According to the minister, the exact type of weapons has not yet been finalized. Authorities are currently evaluating different options, including taser guns and light firearms such as pistols. The final decision will be based on operational needs and safety considerations, with procurement expected to begin before the end of the year.
The move follows a shooting incident in February near Bukit Kayu Hitam, close to the Malaysia-Thailand border. In the incident, an AKPS officer, Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir, came under fire while driving early in the morning. Fortunately, he escaped without injury, but the attack highlighted the risks faced by border personnel.
Officials have emphasized that the nature of duties carried out by border officers often exposes them to dangerous situations, including smuggling activities and cross-border crime. As a result, equipping them with defensive tools is seen as a necessary step to enhance their operational readiness and safety.
The government has stated that the process of selecting and distributing the equipment will be carried out carefully, ensuring compliance with national security policies and regulations. Further announcements regarding the rollout of the weapons are expected in the coming months.
The decision underscores Malaysia’s broader efforts to strengthen border security and protect its personnel, especially in sensitive regions where threats remain a concern. Authorities believe that improved equipment and preparedness will enable the agency to perform its duties more effectively.
