The ongoing conflict along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border has severely disrupted education, leaving thousands of children without access to schools. In areas like Barikot village in Kunar province, classrooms have been destroyed, and families have fled, turning once-active learning spaces into abandoned ruins.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, around 12,000 students have been affected by the violence and urgently need safe spaces to continue their education. Many schools in the region have either been damaged or shut down due to security concerns, forcing children to miss months of learning.
Barikot, a village that once had a functioning school for primary and high school students, now stands deserted after heavy shelling. Residents reported that buildings, including a school and medical center, were badly damaged during the fighting. The destruction has left behind broken classrooms, scattered books, and a silent playground.
The humanitarian situation has worsened as more than 94,000 people have been displaced due to the conflict, with a significant number settling in makeshift camps near the Kunar River. Families are living in temporary shelters with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare, making daily survival a challenge.
Children have been among the worst affected, as many are now unable to attend school. Overcrowded institutions in nearby areas are struggling to accommodate displaced students, while others remain completely cut off from education. Parents and teachers have expressed deep concern over the long-term impact on children’s future.
Local authorities are attempting to address the crisis by relocating families to more organized camps and exploring temporary education solutions. However, limited resources and ongoing instability continue to hinder these efforts, leaving thousands of children in uncertainty.
The conflict has also taken a heavy toll on civilian life, with reports of casualties and widespread damage across border regions. While diplomatic efforts, reportedly supported by China, have helped reduce hostilities, the situation remains fragile, and rebuilding efforts are yet to begin in many affected areas.
The crisis highlights the devastating impact of conflict on education and the urgent need for international support to restore learning opportunities for affected children and rebuild essential infrastructure.
