The United States has announced a new 25% import tariff on all medium and heavy-duty trucks entering the country, a move expected to affect the global automotive market. President Donald Trump confirmed the trade measure on Monday, stating that it will take effect from November 1, 2025.
This announcement comes just before a key White House meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where trade discussions are expected to be a major focus. While the administration has not yet detailed the legal framework for these tariffs, Trump indicated that the decision is influenced by both economic and national security considerations.
The truck tariffs are part of a broader strategy to revise import duties on several goods. Last week, the administration outlined plans to impose tariffs of 100% on pharmaceutical drugs, 50% on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, and 30% on upholstered furniture, citing national security and other justifications.
These tariffs follow an investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which assesses the impact of imports on national security. Earlier investigations into timber and lumber have also shaped the administration’s approach to tariffs on other goods.
Industry experts warn that the new truck tariffs may increase costs for US logistics and construction companies and disrupt international supply chains. Importers are evaluating how the 25% levy could affect pricing, contracts, and trade relations in the coming months.
As November 1 approaches, businesses and global trade partners are preparing for the economic impact of these sweeping tariffs, which mark a significant development in US trade policy.
