In a remarkable 2025 season, Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy emerged as the top wicket-taker in T20Is among Test-playing nations. The 34-year-old proved his worth in the series finale against South Africa in Ahmedabad, claiming four wickets for 53 runs across four overs. His impressive five-match series concluded with 10 wickets, boasting an average of 11.20 and an economy rate of 7.46, which earned him the coveted 'Player of the Series' title.
Throughout the year, Varun showcased his skills in 20 matches, taking 36 wickets in 18 innings at an average of 13.19 and an economy of 7.08. His finest performance included a stellar five-wicket haul of 5/24, tying him with Pakistan's Mohammed Nawaz for the most wickets amongst playing nations this year. Notably, he became India's second-highest T20I wicket-taker in a single calendar year, behind Bhuvneshwar Kumar's 37 wickets in 2022.
Against South Africa, he was particularly dominant, with 22 wickets in eight matches at an average of 11.36 and an economy of 8.06. In the decisive T20I, after losing the toss, India set a formidable total of 231/5, thanks to a sizzling 63-run partnership between openers Sanju Samson (37 off 22 balls) and Abhishek Sharma (34 off 21 balls), and a remarkable 105-run stand for the fourth wicket between Tilak and Hardik Pandya. Corbin Bosch led the bowling attack for South Africa with figures of 2/44.
While Quinton de Kock top-scored for South Africa with 65 off 35 balls, Varun's breakthrough dismissals of Reeza Hendricks and others led to regular wickets falling, resulting in South Africa finishing at 201/8, losing by 30 runs. Jasprit Bumrah shone with the ball, taking 2/17, and Arshdeep Singh chipped in with a wicket. Hardik Pandya was recognized as the 'Player of the Match' for his crucial all-round contribution.
With his extraordinary performances throughout the year, Varun Chakravarthy has solidified his position as a pivotal spinner for India in T20 cricket, showcasing his unique ability to outsmart batters with his enigmatic deliveries.
