Baghdad Erupts in Protests After Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s Reported Death Middle East Tensions Rise

Post by : Shakul

Baghdad has witnessed significant protests and unrest after reports emerged that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in coordinated US and Israeli airstrikes, leading to a wider escalation in the Middle East conflict. Supporters of pro‑Iranian groups gathered in various parts of the Iraqi capital, particularly near the Green Zone, home to diplomatic missions including the US Embassy.

Crowds in Baghdad chanted slogans, waved posters of Khamenei and attempted to approach fortified government and embassy areas. Security forces used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse demonstrators as tensions mounted. The unrest reflects anger among some Iraqi Shi’ite supporters over the reported killing of a major regional figure.

The protests in Baghdad were part of a broader wave of demonstrations across parts of the Middle East after news of Khamenei’s death spread. Pro‑Iranian crowds also marched in other countries, and in some areas clashes with security forces were reported. Authorities in Iraq also declared a three‑day mourning period following the reported death.

The death of Ayatollah Khamenei — who led Iran for nearly four decades and played a key role in shaping its foreign and military policy — has sparked both mourning and anger among Iran‑aligned populations, while others in the region have raised concerns over further escalation of the conflict involving the United States and Israel.
