Coast Guard Drug Bust: 526 Kg Heroin, Meth Seized at Sea

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

A major Indian Coast Guard Operation in the Arabian Sea has led to the seizure of approximately 526 kg of narcotics from an Iranian dhow west of Lakshadweep. The operation was conducted jointly with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad and followed intelligence inputs about the movement of a suspicious vessel. The seized consignment consisted of heroin and methamphetamine and was valued at more than ₹3,000 crore in the international market, according to officials. Five Pakistani nationals found aboard the vessel were also apprehended. The operation took place on September 25 and was publicly reported by authorities on September 30. The case has now moved into a detailed multi-agency investigation, with the vessel and those apprehended taken to Mumbai.

How the Iranian Dhow Was Tracked

The operation began after intelligence agencies received information about a suspicious vessel moving through the maritime region. Coast Guard assets used coordinated sea and air surveillance to locate and continuously track the dhow. Once the vessel was detected west of Lakshadweep, Coast Guard personnel launched a pursuit before boarding it. The operation resulted in the recovery of the suspected narcotics and the detention of the five crew members. The sequence shows how maritime surveillance and intelligence inputs were combined before the vessel was intercepted.

526 Kg Heroin and Methamphetamine Recovered

The central finding in the operation was the recovery of approximately 526 kg of Heroin and Methamphetamine. Officials said the drugs were valued at more than ₹3,000 crore in the international market. The seizure included high-grade narcotics, according to reports based on information released by the agencies. The large quantity has made the operation a significant case for investigators examining maritime drug-trafficking routes. The recovery also gives investigators an opportunity to examine the packaging, origin, intended destination and possible links connected with the consignment.

Five Pakistani Crew Members Apprehended

Five Pakistani nationals were found aboard the Iranian dhow and were apprehended during the interception. Their identities have not been publicly detailed in the reports reviewed so far. The crew and the vessel were escorted to Mumbai under security arrangements. Officials said the next stage involves joint interrogation and further legal proceedings involving multiple agencies. The nationality of the crew is one part of the investigation, but the final determination of their individual roles and any wider network connections will depend on the ongoing inquiry.

Why the Arabian Sea Route Matters

The Arabian Sea Drug Bust has brought renewed attention to maritime routes used for the movement of illegal narcotics. Large consignments can be transported by sea before being transferred to smaller vessels or moved through different routes toward their eventual destinations. According to reports, the intelligence-led operation involved coordination between Gujarat ATS, the Coast Guard and other intelligence agencies. The agencies are now examining the broader network behind the seized consignment. Some reports have provided additional details about the suspected movement of the consignment and its intended transfer, but those aspects remain part of the investigation and should not be treated as final findings.

Vessel and Seized Drugs Taken to Mumbai

After the interception, the dhow, its crew and the seized narcotics were escorted to Mumbai. The move allows multiple agencies to conduct detailed questioning, evidence examination and legal processing from the port city. Investigators are expected to examine the vessel, the seized material and available intelligence to establish where the narcotics originated, who was behind the shipment and where the consignment was ultimately intended to go.

Investigation Now Underway

The Drug Seizure in Arabian Sea is now under multi-agency investigation. Authorities will examine possible connections between the crew, the vessel, suppliers, intermediaries and any intended recipients. The operation also highlights the role of continuous maritime surveillance in identifying suspicious vessels before they can potentially reach Indian waters or transfer illegal consignments. The Indian Coast Guard has described the action as part of its efforts to prevent transnational drug trafficking through maritime routes. The investigation will determine the wider network, the origin and intended destination of the seized drugs, and the individual roles of those apprehended.
