Newark, New Jersey, United States — A vehicle pursuit involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on February 25, 2026, ended in a multi‑vehicle crash in Newark, injuring several people, including three children, city officials said. The incident has drawn criticism from local leaders over the decision to engage in the high‑speed chase.
According to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, ICE agents attempted to stop a van on Shanley Avenue in the early morning when the driver fled, prompting the pursuit. The van subsequently collided with two other vehicles near the intersection with Clinton Avenue and 10th Street. Among those struck was a vehicle carrying two 15‑year‑olds and a 12‑year‑old, all of whom were taken to University Hospital with complaints of pain. The fleeing driver was also hospitalized with injuries following the crash.
Baraka condemned the chase as “reckless and dangerous,” stating that New Jersey laws restrict vehicle pursuits unless the suspect poses an imminent public threat, and emphasised the potential danger to residents in densely populated areas. He said Newark police were not involved in the pursuit and only responded once the accident occurred. The mayor has called for federal authorities to adhere to local safety standards and has taken steps aimed at limiting ICE operations within city limits following the incident.
Federal officials, including spokespeople for the Department of Homeland Security, noted that the operation was part of a targeted effort to arrest a suspect who attempted to evade capture, and that the individual was taken into ICE custody after the crash. The situation remains under review by authorities as the city and federal agencies continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision.
