Chile Denies Medical Services by Chinese Hospital Ship Amid US Pressure

Chile Denies Medical Services by Chinese Hospital Ship Amid US Pressure

Post by : Shakul

Chile has denied permission for a Chinese hospital ship to provide medical services to local residents, citing domestic health regulations, in a move that comes amid growing pressure from the United States over Chile’s expanding ties with China.

Chile’s Ministry of Health said the decision was taken after reviewing a request submitted through the foreign ministry in late 2025 for the Chinese medical vessel Silk Road Ark to offer onboard treatment. Authorities ruled that the ship did not meet national legal requirements, which restrict healthcare services to professionals accredited within Chile.

The ship is currently anchored off the coast near Valparaíso as part of a broader international voyage covering around a dozen countries. Chilean officials emphasized that the decision was based on health regulations rather than diplomatic considerations.

The development coincides with heightened scrutiny from Washington over a proposed undersea telecommunications cable linking Chile and Hong Kong, backed by Chinese firms. The United States has warned the project could threaten regional security and announced visa restrictions on Chilean officials it accuses of compromising critical infrastructure.

Chile’s government has said the undersea cable proposal remains in an early, unconfirmed stage, while reiterating that decisions involving public health and infrastructure will be guided by national law and security assessments.
