Kyoto University has unveiled a robot monk equipped with artificial intelligence trained on Buddhist scriptures. The robot, known as Buddharoid, was introduced at Shoren-in Temple earlier this week.
Developed by a research team at the university, the AI monk is designed to assist or act on behalf of human monks during certain religious services. During the demonstration, the robot responded to questions and performed gestures such as putting its palms together in prayer.
The Buddharoid is powered by BuddhaBot-Plus, an AI chatbot derived from OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It can answer questions related to personal concerns as well as broader social issues using Buddhist teachings as its knowledge base.
Its slow movements, including bowing and prayer gestures, are modeled after a robot manufactured by a Chinese company. Professor Seiji Kumagai, who is part of the research team and also serves as a monk, described the development as a potential paradigm shift. He said the AI monk could support religious institutions at a time when the number of temples in Japan is declining.
