ICE Pursuit Ends in Multi-Vehicle Crash in Newark, 4 Hospitalized Including 3 Minors

Post by : Shakul

Newark, NJ — A vehicle pursuit involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on February 25, 2026 ended in a multi-vehicle crash that hospitalized several people, including three minors, city officials said.

According to Ras Baraka, the incident began just before 8:30 a.m. on Shanley Avenue when ICE attempted to stop a van. The driver fled, prompting a chase that ended at Clinton Avenue and 10th Street when multiple vehicles collided.

Among the injured were two 15-year-olds and a 12-year-old who were passengers in a vehicle struck during the crash. Emergency responders transported the children to University Hospital after they complained of pain. The driver of the fleeing van was also injured and taken to a hospital before being taken into federal custody.

Mayor Baraka criticized the federal pursuit as “reckless and dangerous,” saying it violated New Jersey state law, which limits high-speed vehicle chases unless a suspect poses an imminent threat. He also noted that Newark police were not involved in the chase and only responded to the scene after the crash. “ICE has no business engaging in chases at any time, anywhere — especially in densely populated areas,” he added.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said federal agents were attempting a targeted operation to arrest the driver, who was previously charged with receiving stolen property and had an outstanding order of removal. During the attempt to evade arrest, the suspect struck multiple civilian vehicles, some of which contained children.

Residents, advocacy groups, and public safety officials have expressed concern about the impact of federal vehicle pursuits in urban neighborhoods, especially under hazardous weather conditions following a recent snowstorm.

The New Jersey attorney general’s office has been asked to review the incident, and the city continues to assess the crash’s broader safety implications.
