Taipei, Taiwan — A 5.6‑magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Taiwan on Tuesday afternoon, briefly shaking buildings in the capital Taipei and other northern cities, Taiwan’s weather authorities said.
The quake occurred at 12:37 p.m. local time just off the coast of Yilan County, with its epicenter about 16.9 km from the county government seat and a depth of about 66.8 km below the surface.
There have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to the Central Weather Administration. The quake was strong enough to be felt across parts of northern Taiwan, including New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung and Miaoli.
Taiwan lies near the boundary of two major tectonic plates, making it prone to seismic activity. Past earthquakes include events that caused significant casualties, including a quake in 2016 that killed more than 100 people and another in 1999 that killed more than 2,000
