Kalinga Ghat Landslide: NH-157 Closed After Heavy Rain

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

A fresh Kalinga Ghat landslide incident has disrupted road connectivity in Odisha after several days of heavy rainfall caused serious damage to a vulnerable stretch of National Highway-157 in Kandhamal district. The affected section is located near Andharikot, where a portion of the highway and a retaining safety structure gave way following intense rainfall and water runoff from the surrounding hills. The damage has raised concerns about additional slope failures in the area, particularly if heavy rain continues. Authorities have now stopped vehicular movement through the Kalinga Ghat stretch until further orders. Police personnel have been deployed near the affected section to prevent motorists and other travellers from entering the potentially dangerous zone.

Why NH-157 Has Been Closed

The decision to impose the road closure comes because the damaged stretch remains vulnerable to further deterioration. The retaining barrier was being constructed as a protective measure in an area that has experienced landslide-related problems in the past. Continuous rain over several days washed away part of the highway near the construction site, while runoff from the hills increased pressure on the slope and road structure. Officials are concerned that additional rainfall could weaken the surrounding hillside and result in more soil, rocks or debris coming down onto the highway. The administration has therefore treated the stretch as a safety-sensitive zone rather than allowing normal traffic to continue while the condition of the road is assessed.

Police Deployed, Construction Work Halted

Following the latest damage, authorities have taken several immediate precautionary steps. Police teams have been positioned around the affected section to restrict movement and prevent vehicles from entering the damaged portion of the road. Construction activity has also been stopped temporarily in the vulnerable area. Workers who were present at the site have been moved away from the danger zone as a precaution. The measures are intended to reduce the risk to both construction personnel and members of the public while the road condition remains unstable. Authorities have also appealed to commuters, transport operators and local residents to avoid the Kalinga Ghat route until further instructions are issued.

Kalinga Ghat Is An Important Road Link

The NH-157 section through Kalinga Ghat is an important road connection between Kandhamal and Ganjam districts. The route provides connectivity for people travelling between the interior areas of Kandhamal and the southern Odisha region. Because of its location through hilly terrain, however, the road is particularly vulnerable to landslides and slope-related damage during prolonged periods of intense rainfall. Earlier this week, authorities had already restricted traffic on the Kalinga Ghat stretch as a precaution because of forecasts for very heavy rain. The latest road damage has now resulted in a fresh and more stringent restriction following the deterioration of the highway.

Heavy Rain Increases Landslide Risk Across Southern Odisha

The Kalinga Ghat incident is part of wider weather-related disruption across southern Odisha. Heavy rainfall in recent days has affected several districts, with reports of waterlogging, landslides, road blockages and damage to houses and other infrastructure. The situation has been particularly difficult in hilly and low-lying areas, where continuous rain can quickly increase water flow and weaken slopes. In several locations, authorities have shifted residents from vulnerable areas to safer locations as a precaution. The Kalinga Ghat stretch has been among the locations receiving particular attention because of its history of landslide vulnerability.

Previous Landslide Problems At Kalinga Ghat

The latest Odisha landslide incident is not the first time Kalinga Ghat has suffered major road damage during the monsoon. In September 2025, heavy rainfall triggered a major landslide on the same route, disrupting traffic between Kandhamal and Ganjam. The incident damaged the highway and forced authorities to keep the route closed while restoration work was carried out. The previous disruption demonstrated how quickly intense rainfall can affect transportation through the ghat section. Authorities had also identified the route as particularly vulnerable to landslides and flash flooding during prolonged spells of rain. The recurrence of damage has increased the importance of preventive measures, including retaining structures and careful monitoring of the hillside.

Why The Current Situation Is Being Closely Monitored

The immediate concern is not only the section of road that has already collapsed or been washed away. Officials are also watching the surrounding slopes for signs of further movement. When rain continues for several days, water can penetrate soil and rock layers, increase runoff and weaken already vulnerable slopes. This can create conditions for additional debris movement or road damage. For this reason, allowing vehicles to pass through the affected stretch could create additional risks if another section of the hillside or highway gives way. The administration's decision to keep traffic away from the location is therefore linked to the continuing risk of further damage rather than only the condition of the already affected section.

What Commuters Need To Know

Travellers planning to use Kalinga Ghat should avoid the affected route until the authorities announce that it is safe to reopen. Police deployment is intended to ensure that motorists do not enter the restricted section. The administration has also asked residents, commuters and transport operators to cooperate with the restrictions. Earlier temporary closures of the route had involved diversions through alternative roads, including routes via Chakapada. The availability and suitability of any diversion can depend on the prevailing weather and local road conditions, so travellers should follow the latest instructions from authorities.

What Happens Next?

Further action will depend on weather conditions and an assessment of the damaged highway. Officials are expected to inspect the affected portion and determine the extent of the damage before restoration work can proceed safely. Construction activity in the vulnerable section remains halted while the immediate danger is assessed.
