Such viral clips often attract attention and humour online, but experts say these sightings usually have ordinary explanations rooted in atmospheric or space events.

Objects that appear as bright streaks across the sky are frequently observed around times of rocket launches or when upper‑atmosphere plumes reflect sunlight, producing bizarre luminous patterns sometimes described as “space jellyfish” by skywatchers. For example, sightings of SpaceX rocket plumes lighting up the night sky have caused wide public curiosity and occasional misinterpretation as unidentified flying objects.

Similarly, natural phenomena such as meteors or bolides — bright fireball meteors that burn up in Earth’s atmosphere — regularly create dramatic streaks of light across the sky that can be captured on video and shared widely. Such fireballs may appear to travellers and residents as large bright objects, but are well understood by astronomers as meteoroids entering the atmosphere.

Firework rockets — often called skyrockets or bottle rockets — are small pyrotechnic devices designed to shoot into the air and burst at altitude, and have long been a part of festivals and celebrations.
