France and China have agreed to cooperate on efforts to de‑escalate the ongoing conflict involving Iran, French Foreign Minister Jean‑Noël Barrot said on Tuesday. Barrot held a telephone conversation with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, during which both diplomats committed to seeking a political solution that ensures collective security while considering the aspirations of the Iranian people.
In a statement issued by the French foreign ministry, Barrot reiterated that the Iranian regime bears responsibility for the current escalation after launching attacks on several countries in the region. He also criticised Tehran for failing to respect multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions related to its nuclear programme, ballistic activities and support for non‑state armed groups, as well as rejecting multilateral negotiations in good faith.
Barrot made it clear that France was not involved in the recent military actions attributed to the United States and Israel, and that Paris had no prior knowledge of those operations. He emphasised that disputes should be addressed through international institutions and diplomatic channels, with force used only when absolutely necessary.
China’s foreign ministry also voiced concern about the widening conflict during its regular press briefing. A spokesperson urged all parties to halt military operations in Iran and urged a return to dialogue to prevent the war from spreading into other countries. Beijing said it remained committed to playing a constructive role in striving for peace in the region.
The diplomatic exchange between Paris and Beijing reflects growing international efforts to contain the Middle East crisis, even as hostilities and tensions continue to have ripple effects across global geopolitics.
