Japan’s unemployment rate climbed to 2.7 percent in January, up from 2.6 percent in December, marking the first rise in five months as more workers left jobs to seek better opportunities, government data showed. The increase exceeded market expectations and reflected shifts in the labour market.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the number of employed people declined slightly, while the number of jobless rose. Those voluntarily leaving their jobs — often to pursue improved conditions — jumped nearly 8 percent, signalling confidence among workers to explore new prospects.
The job availability ratio, which measures the number of job openings per job seeker, edged down to 1.18 from 1.19, indicating a slight decrease in labor demand relative to supply. This was the first decline in three months. Separate ministry figures showed particular drops in newly listed jobs in accommodation, restaurant, wholesale, and retail sectors compared with a year earlier.
However, some sectors recorded an uptick in job openings — education, manufacturing, and research services saw increases, suggesting uneven labour market conditions. Analysts have noted that rising living costs and labour expenses are prompting companies to restructure workforces and adopt efficiency measures, including the use of automation and AI.
Japan’s jobless rate remains low by global standards, but the recent uptick indicates subtle shifts in employment dynamics amid broader economic pressures and an aging population that continues to influence labour trends.
