Trump Praises Smit Machchhar After Flydubai Incident

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

U.S. President Donald Trump has praised Indian Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar following a serious cockpit incident aboard Flydubai FZ1073, a flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia on September 30 after a confrontation between the two pilots. According to Israeli officials cited by Reuters, the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar and attempted to take control of the aircraft. The exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation.

Captain Machchhar Injured During Cockpit Struggle

The incident reportedly began while the Boeing 737 was flying over Saudi Arabia. Reuters reported that the aircraft lost nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the emergency. Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar reportedly managed to activate the cockpit door release. This allowed passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and help restrain the other pilot. Two off-duty Flydubai pilots who were travelling as passengers also assisted in bringing the aircraft under control. The plane was subsequently diverted to Tabuk Airport, where both pilots were taken to hospital.

All 174 People on Board Survived

The Dubai to Tel Aviv flight was carrying 174 people, according to reports. Following the emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, passengers were later transported to Israel on another aircraft. The successful landing brought the immediate aviation emergency to an end, while authorities began examining exactly what happened inside the cockpit and why the confrontation occurred. Captain Machchhar has been reported to be in stable condition while receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia.

Trump Calls Machchhar a Hero

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump praised Machchhar for his actions during the crisis. Trump said he had discussed the incident with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and described the Indian captain as a hero. Trump also indicated that some of the details he had heard were still not independently established, making clear that the investigation remains important in determining what happened. Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have also praised Machchhar following the incident. Reuters reported that Modi described him as a hero, while Netanyahu called him a true hero.

Investigation Underway Into Cockpit Incident

The Flydubai cockpit incident has triggered investigations involving authorities in the countries connected to the flight. The UAE has launched an investigation into the circumstances, motive and whether the incident involved prior planning or any terrorist purpose. Israeli officials have described the incident as an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft, but the motive has not been established. Flydubai has also urged against premature speculation while the investigation continues. The incident has also drawn attention to aviation security and the procedures used when a serious confrontation occurs inside an aircraft cockpit.
