Vietnam welcomes Japan PM on official visit

Vietnam welcomes Japan PM on official visit

Post by : Shakul

Le Minh Hung officially welcomed Takaichi Sanae during a formal ceremony held at the Government headquarters in Hanoi on the morning of May 2, 2026. The visit is part of Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae’s official trip to Vietnam from May 1 to May 3, following an invitation from the Vietnamese Prime Minister.

This visit holds special importance as Vietnam is the first country in the region that Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae has visited after being re-elected earlier in February 2026. The visit clearly shows Japan’s strong interest in maintaining and strengthening its relationship with Vietnam during a new phase of development for both nations.

The welcoming ceremony was held in a warm and respectful atmosphere. Children from Hanoi presented flowers to the visiting Japanese Prime Minister, creating a friendly and positive start to the visit. Both leaders then stepped onto the honorary platform where the ceremony officially began.

During the ceremony, the military band played the national anthems of both countries. The two Prime Ministers saluted the military flag and reviewed the Honor Guard of the Vietnam People’s Army. This traditional display reflected the respect and importance both nations give to their diplomatic ties.

After the ceremony, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae held a private meeting. They were later joined by senior officials from both countries for high-level discussions. These talks focused on reviewing past cooperation and planning future collaboration in key sectors.

Both sides are expected to expand cooperation in important areas such as trade, investment, technology, innovation, and sustainable energy. Discussions also include green transformation, digital development, food security, and scientific cooperation, which are seen as major drivers for future growth.

The relationship between Vietnam and Japan has grown stronger over more than 50 years. It is now considered one of the most successful partnerships in the region, built on strong political trust and mutual respect. The upgrade to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023 further strengthened ties between the two countries.

Economic cooperation between the two nations continues to grow steadily. Bilateral trade reached around 52 billion US dollars in 2025, showing an increase compared to the previous year. Japan also remains one of the key investors in Vietnam, contributing through foreign direct investment and development support.

People-to-people connections are also playing a major role in strengthening ties. The Vietnamese community in Japan has grown to over 680,000 people, creating a strong bridge between the two nations. This visit is expected to open new opportunities and further deepen cooperation, contributing to peace, stability, and development in the region.
