Vietnam, US Push New Trade Agreement

Vietnam, US Push New Trade Agreement

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam Prime Minister Le Minh Hung held talks with United States Deputy Trade Representative Ambassador Rick Switzer in Hanoi on May 20, 2026, as both countries moved closer toward finalizing a reciprocal and balanced trade agreement.

During the meeting at the Government headquarters, Prime Minister Hung praised the growing cooperation between Vietnam and the United States across several areas including diplomacy, trade, investment, science, technology, security and innovation.

The Vietnamese leader expressed hope that both nations would continue strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and deepen cooperation in ways that deliver practical benefits for people in both countries while supporting regional peace and economic stability.

Prime Minister Hung welcomed the progress achieved during negotiations for a new reciprocal trade agreement between Vietnam and the United States. He also appreciated the role played by the Office of the United States Trade Representative and Ambassador Rick Switzer in advancing the discussions.

The Prime Minister stated that Vietnam’s government is committed to working closely with American officials to finalize the agreement as soon as possible. He described economic and trade cooperation as one of the most important driving forces behind relations between the two countries.

Hung also assured the US side that Vietnam remains open to American investment and business expansion. He said the Vietnamese government would continue creating favorable conditions for US companies operating in the country.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Vietnam follows market-based economic policies and does not encourage excess industrial capacity. He also reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to protecting intellectual property rights, implementing international labor standards and complying with agreements linked to global trade and the International Labour Organization.

Ambassador Rick Switzer congratulated Le Minh Hung on his appointment as Prime Minister and praised the positive development of bilateral ties in recent years. He described Vietnam as one of America’s key strategic and economic partners in the region.

Switzer said the United States values the ongoing trade negotiations and remains committed to cooperating closely with Vietnam in order to reach an agreement that benefits both sides and further strengthens future relations.
