Just two days ahead of the inaugural ODI in Ranchi, Virat Kohli took to the field for an early practice session. The vacant stadium didn’t deter him; Kohli aimed to acclimate to the pitch and sharpen his focus. Despite his extensive experience of over 300 ODIs, he approaches each game with unwavering commitment. "If I’m arriving somewhere, I arrive at 120 percent," Kohli expressed. His dedication was evident as he practiced diligently, reaffirming his lifelong passion for the sport.
In the first ODI, Kohli delivered an astounding performance, scoring 135 runs off 120 balls. This achievement marked his 83rd international century and his 52nd in ODIs, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record for the most centuries in a single format. Remarkably, he reached this milestone in just 294 innings, while Tendulkar took 451. Kohli’s feat reignited excitement in Ranchi, where fans joyously celebrated as they witnessed his trademark rhythm return.
Kohli’s training regimen emphasizes physical fitness, mental acuity, and situational awareness. His early arrival in Ranchi allowed him to familiarize himself with the playing conditions, and he practiced throughout the day and evening while taking time to rest before the match. He also employs mental visualization strategies, picturing various game scenarios and meticulously planning his responses. This technique helps him maintain confidence and composure on the field, even after protracted breaks from international competition.
During his innings, he adeptly adjusted to a slowing pitch and navigated interruptions, including an unexpected field invasion by a fan. His remarkable tally included seven sixes and eleven boundaries, aiding India in achieving a total of 349 runs and securing a 17-run victory. Kohli emphasized the importance of relishing the game rather than overanalyzing it, allowing instinct and experience to guide his play. He remarked that by keeping a mentally sharp and enjoyable approach, he consistently delivers strong performances.
Kohli doesn’t subscribe to over-preparation; instead, he prioritizes physical fitness, instinctual play, and mental readiness. His practice sessions last from one to two hours in the nets, focused on maintaining peak physical condition. This philosophy equips him for match situations, sharpens his reflexes, and enables outstanding performance. Former player Dale Steyn commended Kohli's dedication to fitness and mental resilience, noting his consistent training in London.
While Kohli has transitioned to exclusively playing ODIs, his impact on Indian cricket is profound. His century in Ranchi demonstrated that his competitive drive, clarity of purpose, and methodologies remain robust. At 37, he continues to significantly influence India’s white-ball cricket, delivering performance that can turn matches. His experience, preparation, and concentration ensure he remains a pivotal player within the team in the years ahead.
