Virat Kohli Announces Sole Focus on ODI Cricket for India

Virat Kohli Announces Sole Focus on ODI Cricket for India

Post by : Maya Rahman

Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has firmly stated that he will not return to Test or T20 international formats. This decision follows his stunning century that led India to a 17-run victory over South Africa. Kohli expressed a desire to concentrate solely on One Day International (ODI) cricket, a move that has surprised many fans. He elaborated that he believes the ODI format aligns best with his skills at this point in his career.

Kohli delivered an exceptional performance during the match, scoring 135 runs off just 120 deliveries. His athletic prowess was evident as he gathered 49 runs solely through running, including 40 singles. With seven sixes and eleven boundaries, this century marked his 52nd ODI hundred, the most by any player in cricket history. His display affirmed that he retains the talent, strength, and focus to excel in ODIs.

Earlier this year, Kohli had already announced his retirement from Test cricket and from T20 internationals following India's T20 World Cup win last year. He remarked that juggling all formats becomes increasingly arduous as one ages. Thus, he wishes to excel in one format, which he identifies as ODIs. With over 300 matches played, he feels highly confident and attuned to this format.

Kohli shared his philosophy regarding training; rather than an overwhelming focus on practice, he prioritizes mental resilience. He stated that a majority of his game is about mental acuity. As long as he feels mentally prepared and self-assured, he can deliver strong performances. Despite taking a full day off prior to the match to rest, he maintains a rigorous physical training routine.

Even after a competitive hiatus since October, Kohli displayed no signs of rustiness. He came to bat against South Africa with ease and confidence, forging a potent 136-run partnership with Rohit Sharma that set up a strong score. His focus was simple: enjoy the game like he used to in his early cricketing days, helping him stay relaxed and competitive.

Kohli feels youthful at heart, expressing that he continues to relish the game. His ability to bat for two hours uninterrupted in practice speaks volumes about his fitness and dedication. He has vowed to give 120 percent in all his performances. If he remains motivated and mentally primed, he is eager to continue contributing to ODI cricket.

Fans were taken aback by Kohli's announcement to step away from both Tests and T20Is, given their status and popularity, especially in light of India’s World Cup achievements. However, many fans expressed support for his focus on ODIs, where he has penned numerous records and memorable matches.

Looking ahead, Kohli is expected to dedicate himself to significant ODI tournaments and series. Experts believe he can sustain his performance for years as long as he remains fit, and he will also continue to participate in T20 matches during the Indian Premier League.

Kohli's retirement from Tests and T20s signifies a pivotal shift in Indian cricket. His unique talent in these formats opens the door for emerging players. Meanwhile, his vast experience will be invaluable in ODIs, inspiring young cricketers in both the locker room and on the field.

Concluding his remarks, Kohli emphasized his determination to play with full commitment and energy. His love for the game drives him to avoid playing half-heartedly, as he pledges to bring his best efforts to the Indian team in upcoming ODI matches.
