Zootopia 2 has taken the cinematic world by storm, with nearly 50% of its earnings from Wednesday to Sunday hailing from China. The animated follow-up amassed an impressive $272 million in China alone, breaking the record established by its predecessor in 2016, thereby claiming the title of the highest-grossing Hollywood animated feature in the nation.
In North America, the film secured $156 million, reigning supreme at the domestic box office. The narrative follows an ambitious bunny cop and her clever fox companion as they unravel mysteries in a whimsical city populated by talking animals, offering humor, heart, and excitement for audiences young and old.
The musical film Wicked: For Good has also captured audiences, pulling in $92.2 million globally during its second weekend and reaching a cumulative total of $393.3 million within just 10 days.
The triumph of these films provides a vital lift for theaters as they approach the bustling holiday season, which is typically one of the year's busiest periods. Year-to-date ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada have hit $7.8 billion, a slight increase from last year yet still below pre-pandemic figures.
Industry experts are hopeful that the current wave of successful releases, along with vigorous marketing strategies and trailers, will bolster attendance through the remainder of the year, especially with the highly anticipated launch of the next Avatar film on the horizon.
