Kyiv, Ukraine – Over 600,000 people in the Kyiv region have been left without electricity following a series of overnight attacks by Russian forces, officials reported on Saturday. According to Ukraine’s Energy Ministry, more than 500,000 of the affected are in the capital city itself, while the remaining residents in the surrounding areas are also enduring power cuts. The ministry attributed the outages to missile and drone strikes targeting key energy infrastructure across the city and nearby regions.
Ukrainian authorities reported that nearly 36 missiles and almost 600 drones were launched at multiple targets during the night. The strikes killed three people and injured dozens, including a 13-year-old child in Kyiv. Residential buildings and energy facilities were among the primary targets, causing extensive damage and leaving many civilians stranded in freezing conditions.
Loud explosions were heard throughout the capital in the early hours of Saturday, prompting emergency services to respond to burning residential blocks. Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitaly Klitschko, confirmed the injuries and called for heightened vigilance among residents as the city faces another harsh winter. Temperatures in Kyiv are expected to drop to 2°C on Sunday, with December averages remaining below freezing.
Russia’s Defence Ministry described the strikes as a “massive attack” on Ukraine’s military-industrial complexes and energy facilities supporting them. Ukrainian officials said the bombardments represent a continuation of Moscow’s efforts to target civilian energy infrastructure, a tactic used repeatedly since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
In response, the Ukrainian Air Force claimed it intercepted and shot down 558 drones and 19 missiles overnight, highlighting the intensity of the defensive operations amid relentless attacks. Despite these measures, the ongoing strikes have severely disrupted daily life, with widespread blackouts affecting homes, hospitals, and critical services.
Ukraine has also carried out targeted strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including oil refineries and depots, using long-range weapons designed to disrupt Moscow’s revenue streams that fuel the war. Analysts have noted that both sides are increasingly focusing on energy systems as strategic targets as the conflict continues into its fourth winter.
The recent escalation comes despite ongoing international diplomatic efforts, led by the United States and its allies, to secure a ceasefire or peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. With the winter season intensifying, Ukrainian residents are facing compounded challenges from both military attacks and severe weather conditions.
